2.5G Mobile Networks: GPRS and EDGE

By
Sumit Kasera, Nishit Narang and A.P.Priyanka

2.5G Mobile Networks: GPRS and EDGE culminates the trilogy of books written by Sumit Kasera and Nishit Narang on three key wireless technologies - 2G, 2.5G and 3G Mobile Networks. Even though 2G and 2.5G, as compared to 3G, are more than a decade old, the current corporate battle for 2G spectrum in India indicates the significance and growth potential of these technologies, including GSM and GPRS.

This book derives its strength from lucid procedural descriptions and detailed illustrations, which both the novice as well as the experienced professionals can appreciate equally. To start with, the book first provides a reasonably comprehensive overview of GSM networks that essentially summarizes their earlier work on the topic. The next chapter then talks about the GPRS network architecture. Both the transmission plane as well as control plane architecture is well explained. The air interface is discussed next where the key topics like logical channels as well as channel coding are nicely elaborated. The next two chapters cover the most important air interface protocols, namely the Medium Access Protocol and the Radio Link Control protocol. In these chapters there is a healthy mix of concepts and the protocol. The presentation then moves to the core network protocols including the GPRS Mobility Management and Session Management. Both these chapters are well illustrated with flow diagrams to drive the point. The GPRS user plane aspects are further detailed in Chapter 8. The book ends with final chapter on EDGE where the key differences between GPRS and EDGE are summarized, along with coverage on the important aspects of EDGE.

The book is useful for a wide audience set, and readers of this book would include:

  • Engineers/Telecom/Software Professionals: Phenomenal investments have been made in the Mobile Cellular Networks in the last one-year or so. In India too, there have been phenomenal grown in mobile communications. Given this, there will be demand among professionals for a book that gives a simple yet comprehensive treatment of GPRS/EDGE. This book is destined to serve this purpose.
  • Network Operators: The engineers with the telecom operators would also find this book useful.
  • Marketing staff: People in the marketing department quite often complain that technical books are too complicated to comprehend. This book with its simple presentation will make them find this book extremely readable and very informative.
  • Students: Since this book comprehensively covers the basic concepts of GSM and avoids complicated mathematical formulaes, the book should be very popular with students studying and doing research on GPRS/EDGE.
